If you have these lines on your nails, you should pay attention

Many people think nail care is only about appearance, but your fingernails can also offer clues about your overall health. Changes such as ridges, grooves, or lines are often harmless, yet they may sometimes reflect nutritional deficiencies or certain medical conditions. Whether these lines run vertically or horizontally can provide important information.

Vertical ridges, which extend from the base of the nail to the tip, are very common and usually develop as a normal part of aging. As nail growth changes over time, these fine lines often become more noticeable. Less commonly, pronounced ridges accompanied by changes in nail shape or texture may be associated with iron deficiency or certain skin conditions.

Horizontal ridges, called Beau’s lines, are deeper grooves that run across the nail. They typically appear when nail growth temporarily stops due to significant physical stress, illness, or recovery from a serious infection. They may also develop after treatments such as chemotherapy or, in some cases, be linked to conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid disorders.

Most nail changes are not a cause for concern, and dark spots or streaks often result from minor injuries. However, discoloration, dark lines, or other changes that appear without a clear cause and do not fade should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Paying attention to persistent or sudden nail changes can be a helpful way to monitor your overall health and identify potential problems early.
